The Bloom
Where Art meets generative design
While art is often a vehicle for fantasy, this piece is an invitation to plunge deeper into our own world and discover just how astonishing it can be. This 3D printed sculpture mesmerizes in its mathematical and mobile magnificence.
The Bloom draws from the numerical properties found in nature, like spiral patterns commonly seen in sunflowers, pinecones, and cacti. The kinetic object is spun and animated as single, self-contained sculpture, unlike a 3D zoetrope, which mobilizes a sequence of small changes to a particular form.
The Bloom’s animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio that nature employs to generate the spiral patterns we see in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotational speed and strobe rate of the Bloom are synchronized so that one flash occurs every time the bloom turns 137.5º (the angular version of phi).
The Fibonnaci sequence and other fractals have long been a point of interest where art meets nature meets tech. If you’re interested in commissioning a custom designed bloom, complete with strobe light and turntable for your home or private collection, please let us know.
